Well, I don't like its size  I would prefer some phone with more features, something running on Win Mobile for Pocket PC. But if you don't need something like that, VX-9800 is pretty good choise !

this phone is only good if it is open. the screen on the outside is to small to see anything on. the phone is also a pretty large phone. most v-cast phones have lots of great v-cast games but this phone only has a couple. this phone looks great in pictures but worse in person. :( hopfuly verizon will put out better messaging phones for the holidays.

I just purchased the phone and I am very happy with the phone. You have people who prefer a certain type of phone, so there will always be complaints about a design, but the phone is a very good phone as a whole. The main screen on the inside has amazing color clarity and the MP3 player is outstanding. Some complain about the screen outside being to small, well it was designed like that for a reason. It may not be for a person who has poor vision I guess. I don't see anything wrong with the phone aside from it's bulkiness. But, the phone has a lot to offer so I can't Imagine squeezing all those features into anything smaller.

This is the third Vcast phone I have purchased (Audiovox 8940, Motorola E815) and they all offered about the same number of VCAST games. Maybe your phone was jacked up or something. I guess there is a phone out there for everyone and this one is just not for you. I have had several phones that cost about the same as this one and I think this is a very good phone.

thank you all for butting your info on this phone. i my self looking to get this phone because i like the idea able to take pictures ( because i am a photographer ) but i also love you can play MP3 and go on line and see your e-mail or chat with messager like the SIDEKICK.
but like am 1 i don't want to buy the phone and have to pay for ever thing to use it. SO do you have to pay for the MP3 if so now much does it come out and how many sounds can you hold. also as for the pictures what is the biggers it can go to be able to print it and what size will that be. i am sure to use the internet i have to pay but to use MESSAGER or E-MAILS how much will it come out to a MONTH. thats pretty much it i am looking for a phone that is a IPOD, SIDEKICK, and DIGITAL CAMERA all in 1 and i heard this 1 was the so far the best.
if any 1 can help me out please have me know can e-mail me at intopics2000@yahoo.com if you have this phone want to hear from you please

I got this phone and it is really nice but i do have a couple problems issues... i only had it for 2 days so im sure i just didnt figure sum thigns out but if anyone knows the solutions to these that would be great...
(1) Taking Pictures, when i take pictures and set it as walpaper there is no way to crop it like in older lg phones to make it fill up the whole screen. what is up with that!?
(2) In older LG's i could record sounds using the voice memo and set them as alerts and ringtones....this one i cannot!! I even tried sending myself the sound and then trying to set it as a ringtone but thats didnt work either, i just dont feel like giving verizon $2.99 a ringtone.
(3) I have ordered a mini sd card, but not sure how the playing of mp3's will work...and can u set the mp3's on the sd card as ringtones?
i knows i have more questions but cant think of them....

I just recently purchased this phone as well.. and like a previous poster.. i have a few concerns
PROPLEMS
1. There is no voice recorder..
2. There is no way to talk on speaker phone unless the phone is open..
3. The phone does not vibrate then ring... (its only vibrate or ring)
4. Pictures dont crop and dont fill the entire screen (i think it might have something to do with the resolution)
5. ringtones cost way to much... whatever happend to .99C
6. There are hardly any custom options (i think there are 4 or 5 color options)
7. The instant messager doesnt recignize all your buddies that are online... it says they are signed off when they arent
COOL THINGS
1. The camera is the best quality ive seen on a phone yet.. by far
2. The internet is pretty quick... and farely inexpensive
3. The memory card thing is cool (sopposedly you can download all your music onto it tv shows whatever and watch them through your phone... you are also sopposed to be able to use the songs as ringtones??? i havent tried it yet though
4. The qwerty keyboard is awsome... you can type so fast on it..
5. If you are into what people think... youll get a lot of compliments
OVERALL-
im pretty happy with my phone... there are some options that irritate me or (the lack of) and i would say if you are willing to spend between 350-500 for this phone maybe you should jump up to a PDA phone... but it isnt much bigger then a nextel and about the same size of a nextel if you include the antena... sooo... thats my take on it so far... i hope that helps out a little

how can you use audio from "my sounds" as a ring? I used a sound editor and cut up mp3 files then reformatted them and saved them, then attached them to an email which was recieved (on my vx 6100) as a ringtone. Does this not work with the 9800?

I would also like to know why you can't set the sounds you have under SOUND in your VX9800 as ringtones. I know the Samsung A950 that I have allows you to set what's under the SOUND menu as ringtones. I coverted a .wav to .midi and sent it to myself and I can play it on my LG but I can't set it as my ringtone. Anyone know about this?

The 9800 comes with the same ringotnes as the 6100. However if you download you can get some pretty nice songs, but it is a real rip off. You can go on your computer and llok around for free ones to download. then send them to yournumber@vzwpix.com and save it. That is one good thing about the 9800.

You can cut all of your own songs on your computer and send them to yourself in text message form, but when you receive it, you can only save it into my sounds. You can not transfer my sounds into ringtones, so unless you are just wanting to send the songs just to listen to occassionally on your phone, there is no point in doing it.

There are any number of forums out there that will tell you everything you need to know about this phone -- you can mp3's as ringtones, you can rip DVDs and put the video on the phone, and a ton more.

You all are pretty clueless:
As for your "problems" list:
1. WRONG--There is a voice recorder..
2. WRONG--You can set it up to talk on speaker phone with it closed.
3. Somewhat WRONG--The phone can be set to vibrate first then ring (although it takes some fancy manipulation of the ringtone files you are using)
4. Mostly WRONG--Pictures can be made to fill the entire inner screen and all of the outer except the area reserved for icons.
5. WRONG AGAIN -- with a cable and BITPIM ringtones are FREE.
6. Okay -- you finally got one right -- almost all Verizon phones now use the standard UI now and Verizon doesn't think you are smart enough to handle options..
7. Don't have a clue on this one -- don't use instant messager so don't really care.

1. There are limitations on file names and there are specific file structures that have to be followed to put your songs on the miniSD and access them -- see the statement below.
2. There is no web site I know of where you can get them AND get them on the phone for free -- HOWEVER, this does not mean they cannot be put on there for free. There are any number of web sites where you can get free ringtones and download them to your computer -- then it becomes a matter of getting them onto your phone. Cables and the necessary software exist to do this. Again, see the statement below.
3. RTFM. This question clearly shows how clueless you are in all of this. See the statement below.
The answers to all of your questions, and walk-thrus, and instructions and help all exist in a number of places (other forums) on the web. Unfortunately, it takes some savvy to be able to accomplish what you ask. If you have that savvy you should easily be able to find the places witht the answers to your questions -- if you don't I certainly am not going to get involved with trying to teach the uneducated how to use technology they do not understand (and probably shouldn't have).
As a side note -- those same places also have information about doing things with your phone that you probably haven't even thought of yet -- ripping DVDs and moving them to the phone to watch, etc.

Ah, but I have custom ringtones on my phone, along with about 300 MP3s, and 3 DVDs (currently). I change the DVDs out weekly for my commute. You can't seem to figure it out can you. Too bad.
Here'a a clue -- do you have a USB cable yet? (or a bluetooth dongle for your computer?). Do you have a program called BITPIM yet? If not you're screwed -- ringtones cannot be done without them....
MP3s can and they are easy -- all you got to do is copy them to the appropriate place on the card. You have formatted your card correctly for the phone haven't you, clueless?? Any idea how to do that?? Got any idea on what the file structure should be? Oh clueless one -- we're waiting....
As for video -- all that takes is a ripper, a converter to put it into the correct format for the phone and to place it appropriately on the card. Hey clueless, you know what a ripper is? You know what the video format the phone supports??
Come back when you do -- maybe I'll give you more of the answer......

You are soooo funny....
Got your MP3s on your card yet?
The answer is there -- all you have to do is read it...
The 9800 rocks as an MP3 player.
Alas, we'll take pity on the clueless one....
MP3 names cannot be more than 43 charaters, they cannot use any of the reserved characters, they must be placed in the MP3 folder, the card must be formated in the phone PRIOR to use. The MP3s cannot contain any of the DRM copy protect crap (beware stuff from ITunes). The files must be true MP3 files not WMA or MID files that have simply been renamed. Having album art embeded in the files sometimes causes problems.
Okay -- any other questions?

You should be putting the pix in the MY PIX folder on your card -- then, with card in phone go to GET IT NOW -- GET PIX & FLIX -- MY PIX scroll till it highlights the pix you want and press OK.

1) Put the card in the phone and re-boot the phone. I.E. Power it off and back on.
2) From the inside menu select TOOLS -- SYSTEM -- MANAGE MEMORY -- CARD MEMORY -- and then hit the soft key for OPTIONS and it brings up a selection for FORMAT.
FORMATTING the card will erase anything on it and also set up the menu structure the phone needs things to be in for it to work. Oncve you format it put it in your card reader for your computer and copy the MP3 files to the MY MP3s folder on the card.
Once you have the files trhere you should be able to select GET IT NOW --GET TUNES AND TONES -- MY MP3S and select the sone you want to hear and hit OK.
Keep in mind you need to follow the naming structure and stuff from the post above.
Hope this helps.

Where did the songs come from? Are they really MP3s or are they another format just named as MP3? Do they have any DRM or album art embedded in them?
I'm afraid I can't help you -- simply saying its broke doesn't provide enough information.......

Hard to say without knowing what format they actually are -- try Windows Media Player.
Look at the properties for the files and see if you can figure out what format they are in -- I believe Media Player will let you save them in a different format.... Not sure though, I don't use it much.

ok here is how u get ringtones.
First you can put a whole mp3 on if u want but i suggest using a wave editor program to clip a 20 to 30 sec clip from an mp3 because that is all you really need for a ringtone.
First connect you phone with the bluetooth or usb cord.
Then you need to download BitPim you can get it for the website bitpim.com
once you have that dowloaded and started up under the edit menu you'll you'll see the option detect phone click that it will take a min but it should then tell you that it found your phone. once that is done go back up to the top i can't remember what menu it was but its the third one over you'll see the option get data from phone choose then make sure you check the ringtones box and hit ok then on the left side you will see the word ringers click on that and then it should display the ringtones that you have downloaded on your phone. Then take the mp3 you want to put on and drag it into the window. A box will then pop up at the top you can choose the quality u want i use 2, 44100, and 128 as my settings because that is a pretty standard mp3 and sounds nice on the phone. after you choose the settings hit convert and when that is done hit ok. After that go back up to the top menu and under the third one you will see the option send to phone choose that. This may take awhile depending on how many you are adding and how big the file is but when it is done sending it you can open up your ringers menu on your phone and they will be right there. Good luck.
Does anyone know how to put a full movie on i haven't tried it yet but that would work really well while im at work

And people posting in this thread really need to learn to type / proof-read wow.
Either way, my card doesn't seem to be able to format with a folder called "my_mp3", it's "my_music". There is another folder called "my_mp3_playlists" but putting the mp3s in that folder doesn't work either. I don't use iTunes to rip, the names are shorter than 43 chars. I can get mp3 ringtones to work just fine but cannot get regular mp3s to play. They just simply do not show up no matter what formatting / file placement I do. Would someone be willing to explain what I could be doing wrong?

What you need to do is use Windows Media Player 10, have your phone plugged in the USB and turned on. Next go to Get it Now, Tunes, Sync. Once WMP10 recognizes your phone, you can add music from your library. (WMP10 has to convert the mp3 before it syncs the music, but its fast)

That because they ARE compatible. Version 5 of the firmware supports 2 gig cards.

If you are putting you files in MY_MUSIC and they need to be WMA. If they are MP3 they need to go into MY_MP3s. If you don't see MY_MP3s then you need to re-enable MP3 support from the hidden settings menu. If you don't know how to do that you need to visit your friend Mr. Google. I could tell you but that'd take all the fun out of it!!

you've got the same version phone that i do that doesn't have the vcast update. if you want to sync your phone, then you have to get the firmware updatee. when they give you the updatee, it disables the mp3 player and the EQ which is pretty much the only reason i bought this phone. after i realized that my phone wouldn't play my mp3's anymore, i harassed the tech guy untill he finally grabbed my phone, pressed a few buttons and said it was good to go. when i went in to get the upgrade, no one told me anything about what it would do to my mp3 playing capabilities. i got the feeling that the tech guy wasn't supposed to re-enable the mp3 player too. he acted like it was a big secret. so if you want to be able to sync yer phone, you have to get the upgrade, but don't be surpised if you can't play mp3's after that. you can still play wma files. in fact that's what they want you to do. mp3's are pretty much free. wma's cost $1 per song. if anyone knows the secret trick to re-enable the mp3 player, they should come off it and quit being coy about it. i would also like to know if there's a hack that will get the phone to recognize a 2GB card.

Version 5 of the firware recognizes 2 GB cards.
Its no secret at all how to re-enable MP3 support -- its all over the frigging web -- go to the hidden menu and re-enable it its very simple.
Open
Hit MENU
Hit 0
Hit 0 six more times
go to 12 MUSIC
select either MP3 Only or MP3 & MOD
Hit OK
Simple....

Take the phone back to Verizon and give it to them and tell them you are too stupid to operate it and ask if they'll replace it with a Migo.
What, pray tell, possessed you to take a big assed movie and shove it over to a device with limited memory resources??
Good chance you can have Verizon re-flash the phone and it may fix the problem.

...the hidden menu was new to me; I loaded a gig or so of MP3's via the miniSD card, the music being half the reason I bought this model, and was baffled by the user-unfriendliness of how the eff to play them. Thanks--you've made a boring job that much better.

There is no free lunch.
Go BUY a cable, go download BITPIM and you can add ringtones depending upon your ability and version of firmware on the phone. Are ringtones really that damn important?
