here are some general ground rules to avoid being scammed out of your hard earned money.

1. Never trust anybody!
I know its a bit harsh but ALWAYS get the identifiers for the equipment you are wanting to purchase (ESN, IMEI, SIM IDs) and run them by thier respective carriers to check for fraud or theft status. Pictures too if possible with the phone in off and on positions (to see if the equipment is damaged).
2. If selling equipment, Make sure that you get all information about the package, tracking and such incase you need to revert the package if the customer had not paid you. Use Paypal. its a bit safer and more reliable than sending a check through the mail.
3. if buying equipment, refer to rule 1 and come back here to know that you should only buy equipment from within the US. Never buy equipment from international locations.
4. The best way to tell is if thier message looks like this if its a scam.

also get photos of any liquid damage indicators on the phone to see if they are activated or not.
